Evaluation
of the Asthma Action Plan Initiative
As
part of the implementaion of these recommendations, the members of the
Pediatric Asthma Work Group worked together and with others in their
prospective states to develop an easy-to-use standard form for written
pediatric asthma action plans. The objective was to devlop a single
form that could be endorsed by a spectrum of public and private health
care organizations and made avalable at no cost to physicians and other
providers caring for children with asthma. Working off a similar template,
a standard Pediatric Asthm Action Plan form was adopted statewide and
disseminated in 2001 in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts,
reaching thousands of providers, as well as families and school nurses
in many cases.
In
2003, NEPHMCC completed an evaluation of the asthma action plan, working
in collaboration with Massachusetts Health Quality Partners, the Rhode
Island Department of Health and the Connecticut Department of Public
Health. This evaluation focused on the extent to which the asthma action
plan was incorporated and institutionalized into practice in the three
participating states, on ways that the asthma action plan has improved
asthma management for children, and on ways that the action plan can
be improved.
